Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about how this site and its guides work.
Is Appliance Reset free to use?
Yes. Every diagnostic guide is free to read, with no account or sign-up required.
Do I need to know my appliance's model number to use a guide?
No. Guides are organized by symptom first — what you're seeing or hearing — so you can start diagnosing before you've tracked down a model number. Brand-specific detail (like error codes) is layered in where it's useful.
Are these guides written by licensed technicians?
Guides are researched and verified against manufacturer documentation and established repair references, and each one is upfront about which signs mean a repair is outside safe DIY territory. They're meant to help you diagnose and decide next steps, not to replace a licensed technician for repairs that call for one.
How do I know if I should attempt a repair myself or call someone?
Every guide includes a "When to Call a Professional" section listing the specific signs that mean it's time to stop — things like gas smells, refrigerant issues, or exposed wiring. If none of those apply and the fix is within the guide's diagnostic steps, it's generally safe to continue.
How often are guides updated?
New guides are added in small batches as they're written and verified, and existing guides are revisited when we find something outdated or missing. Each guide shows the date it was last verified.
I don't see a guide for my problem. What should I do?
Try the search box in the header for related symptoms, or browse by appliance from the homepage. If you still can't find it, let us know — see the Contact page.
